Traveling by Plane
The main airport in Guatemala is La Aurora International Airport located near Guatemala City. Most of the international flights arriving here come from other major Central American and North American cities. Thanks to the countries departure tax, the airport has been undergoing tons of modernization. The airport has plenty of shops, but still has a limited amount of restaurants.
The next most popular airport in Guatemala is located in Flores, Peten. This airport is much smaller and usually gets flights nearby destinations like Mexico City, Guatemala City, and Belize.
Depending on where you are flying from, it may be cheaper to fly to Cancun, Mexico and take a bus through Belize. You can also look into taking a cheap flight from Mexico City to Tapachula which is located at the Mexico/Guatemala border.
Traveling by Car
From destinations North of Guatemala it is easy enough to take the Pan-American Highway directly to Guatemala.
Taxis here are usually the small, three wheeled tuk-tuk vehicle. Most of these can carry around two to three people. These tuk-tuks dont have meters so you will want to negotiate the fare before you get in.
It is possible to rent a car in Guatemala. rental rates are usually around US$60 a day to US$300 a week. These prices include mileage and basic insurance.
Traveling by Bus
If you are on a budget or looking for a many adventure, you will more than likely be riding the “chicken buses.” These colorfully decorated buses are probably the most common form of transportation for Guatemalans. They are extremely cheaper than any other form of transportation in the country, including taxis. These buses get crowded very quickly and are usually slow going with many stops.
While there some areas that act as bus stops, you can pretty much grab one of these buses anywhere along its route. All you need to do is stick your arm out and wave it down. Once on the bus, the conductor will ask you where you are gong and collect your fare.
