A popular means of accommodation in Guatemala for backpackers and budget travelers, hostels are the ultimate way to stretch your budget for all its worth. While Guatemala has a limited amount of hostels in the country, they do exist. Unfortunately, you wont find many of them on the internet. Your best chance at finding good hostels is from word of mouth by other travelers.
Before you book
Before booking a reservation for a hostel in Guatemala you should consider the following:
- In Guatemala, hostels may also be called a “Hostal”
- Sometimes hostels advertise themselves as “youth Hostels.” This doesn’t mean there is an age restriction. It is simply a marketing ploy.
- Sometimes bed and breakfasts advertise themselves as hostels or budget accommodation’s. While they will be cheaper than hotels in Guatemala, they are not as cheap as hostels.
- Hostels can range from awesome to nothing more than a roof and four walls. Try to talk to other travelers and see what hostels they recommend.
- Many hostels are mainly dorm rooms or rooms with 4 to 5 beds. Sometimes these dorms are co-ed, while others are gender specific. Many hostels also offer private rooms at a higher rate.
- There are many factors that determine the price of a hostel. The two main factors are time of year and popularity of the location.

- Prices at hostel don’t tend to change during the busy season. If they do, its only by a few dollars.

There are a number of backpacker friendly hostels in Antigua that offer dorm rooms, internet, and other backpacker necessities. One such hostel is Los Encuentros Hotel. Beds here start at around US$7 a night.
